Roberts and his family recently moved into base housing after the station permanently moved to Tyndall. Interesting thing about Minot. It is less than 55 miles from the Canadian border. Not so nice in Minot. it seems like an endless winter in north dakota.

While many enjoy the installation mission (bombing and missiles), many don't like being in such a remote location without a major city. Think of those odd assignments like being at a National Guard post (hello Camp Shelby), recruiting, or those temporary deployments.
Minot Afb
While they may seem cool and different and offer good family time, they can be a struggle if you're not ready to live a civilian life. Most of these missions don't provide your typical military installation and community, and it's all about the economy.
As mentioned elsewhere, you are surrounded by water and there is so much to see and do. You will quickly immerse yourself in the local culture and cuisine. Many who live here have used the opportunity to find cheap flights to explore Australia, Korea, Thailand and other Asian destinations.
Depending on your branch, you may see a lot of sea duty, but for families that have deployed there, many want to return. Actually, it was because of the frustration of the army. When the weekend started, I always wanted to be as far away from being a Soldier as possible.
Frames, high five shade and no scenery was my recipe for a good weekend. Known as the Joint Training Center and the National Training Center (respectively), these are places where you can find low-level military personnel for a variety of reasons.
Remote Assignments
Fort Polk lives in Louisiana, where hot summers and mosquito problems can make the area unpleasant. Fort Irwin is located in the California desert, near Death Valley National Park and the Mojave National Preserve. The only saving grace is that Las Vegas is less than 3 hours away.
You can send your personal belongings from one workplace to another. The government allows you a weight limit based on your rank and family status. Usually, movers can pack and move your items or you can do it yourself.
You may also be allowed to deliver or store your personal vehicle, depending on where your orders are located. The government will provide transportation for you and your dependents from one workplace to another. You will be transported in a government aircraft or vehicle, issued a common carrier (airline, train, etc.) ticket, or paid to travel in your own private vehicle (POV).
No matter where the military sends you on your next adventure, most would say your favorite duty is the one you left and your worst is the one you're currently on. Wherever you end up on this planet, take time to enjoy the culture, the scenery, and the adventures you'll have.

Fort Polk/Fort Irwin
Ask anyone who has PCSed more than once and they will tell you their favorite and least favorite places to be. This may be due to proximity to family, the location around the facility or the service member's working hours.
Scouring the country, here are the jobs ranked as the best and worst. Eating a rare bluefin tuna in a marsh off the coast of Georgia, walking through the pines of the Pacific Northwest, or seeing the lights of Vegas in the middle of Death Valley from a distance are all things I would never have thought of.
Located on the other side of California's Mojave National Preserve is this Marine Corps base that houses the Air Ground Combat Center. Again, the desert climate and dry heat make it a desirable site, and despite the name, there are no palm trees.
In addition to Las Vegas, residents also have Los Angeles as a sensible getaway. Like Hampton Roads, the San Diego area has several nearby locations that allow local PCSs to spend extended time there. Many people love the beach and surf life and the locations bring you closer to many places to visit and see.
Household Goods And Vehicle Shipment
The only negatives noted were the higher cost of living and the housing market. A PCS transfer can be a transfer between one workplace and another, or a transfer between your last workplace and your home of record after retirement or discharge.

However, my fellow soldiers were hesitant to explore the wild world the Army was consigning us to. The bottom line is that the military will take you all over the world and put you in situations that no one in your hometown would believe.

Twentynine Palms
When I signed up, neither did I. However, talking to a girl who looked Chinese but had a heavy Russian accent in a mountain yurt that looked like Colorado is something I will remember until the day I die.
It's still a wild experience as I remember it twelve years later. Choose any location in Florida and you'll find that service members love it. Optemo is not too bad, you can spend family time, the beach is a short drive away and there is always Disney.
If you're on the East Coast, you might be able to see a space launch. The only downside mentioned was the possibility of hurricanes. Now called Joint Base Lewis-McChord, this is definitely one of the worst workplaces.
South of Tacoma, Washington is famous for Mount Rainier. However, many despise the usually wet, cold and gloomy climate. Some will also complain about the pace of the installation, which limits family time. So if you like warm weather, sun and free time, there is nothing here for you.
San Diego/Camp Pendleton
I know, let the priest tell you to go to church, but seriously, it's a torch for young soldiers. Churches, mosques and synagogues are community centers. At one point in American public life, even nonbelievers attended church to connect with others in their community.

Today, many faith communities engage small groups of people your age. There are wild game dinners, block parties, fall festivals, and many other events that churches use to grow their membership. They are a great way to make strong friendships with people outside of the military that will help you build a home away from home.
What seemed like a great adventure to him was just survival to me. I was mostly a high school student when I left the swamps of southern Arkansas for Ft. Drum, New York. I had never even heard of that place.
When I learned that sub-zero temperatures and snow globes were common for most of the year, I thought I was the unluckiest person to ever sign up. Another place with lots of beaches to choose from and good hiking spots too.
The Dream Sheet
